Barcelona, capital of the Catalonian autonomous region with its four splendid and versatile provinces, is the perfect spot to start a breath-taking tour enclosing an impressive wealth of natural splendour, fascinating culture and historical sights. One can also choose to visit the tiny independent principality of Andorra on the roof of the Pyrenees. Back in Catalonia one will find so many interesting examples of culture that one won’t even know where to begin. Unique buildings in Barcelona, aka “the capital of Modernism”, such as the Sagrada Familia Cathedral or the Palau de la Música Catalana Auditorium, the outstanding archaeological site at Tarraco and the monastery of Poblet in Tarragona or the churches of the Boí valley in Lleida… all declared World Heritage sites by the UNESCO.

What’s more one can opt to enjoy a whole range of events thanks to the programme of world-class museums like the National Art Museum of Catalonia and the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres.

For adventure head north where the Pyrenees rise to 3000m peaks. Here hiking trails weave among valleys and lonely villages are crowned with Romanesque churches and monasteries. And if one loves mountain scenery what could be better than an excursion to the Catalan Pyrenees featuring ski resorts which are tailor-made for snow tourism. Or to the National Park of Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici.

To the south is like stepping even further back in time, the Roman and Greek ruins of Tarragona are among Spain’s most impressive. And an entirely different landscape awaits in the Delta de l’Ebre’s shimmering wetlands, home to flocks of pirouetting flamingos.

This is an area so rich in scenery and heritage from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea.
