Barcalona

Discover it all taking off from Barcelona !

Barcelona, capital of the Catalonian autonomous region with its four splendid and versatile provinces, is the perfect spot to start a breath-taking tour enclosing an impressive wealth of natural splendour, fascinating culture and historical sights. Pyrenean peaks loom above meadows and fertile vineyards, plains are pock-marked with volcanic cones, and rocky coves punctuate sandy beaches.

The spectacular beaches in areas such as the Costa Brava its world-class gastronomy, and the works of famous artists such as Gaudí and Dalí all make this region one of Spain’s most popular destinations.

Visitors to this area in north-eastern Spain should really make a point of stopping off at the spectacular beaches of the Costa Dorada, Costa Barcelona and Costa Brava with such internationally renowned resorts as Salou, Sitges, Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués, Cambrils, Lloret de Mar and Roses. Catalonia also has numerous marine resorts which are ideal for indulging in a whole range of water activities.

One can also choose to visit the tiny independent principality of Andorra on the roof of the Pyrenees. The country is a natural wonderland of green mountains, blues skies, crystal-clear waters and pure oxygen. Besides the explosion of colour and life that characterizes the Principality, it cordially invites you to enjoy many other experiences and activities during this season. R&R, culture, shopping, gastronomy. A true pleasure for the senses.

Back in Catalonia one will find so many interesting examples of culture that one won’t even know where to begin. Unique buildings in Barcelona, aka “the capital of Modernism”, such as the Sagrada Familia Cathedral or the Palau de la Música Catalana Auditorium, the outstanding archaeological site at Tarraco and the monastery of Poblet in Tarragona or the churches of the Boí valley in Lleida… all declared World Heritage sites by the UNESCO.

What’s more one can opt to enjoy a whole range of events thanks to the programme of world-class museums like the National Art Museum of Catalonia and the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres.

For adventure head north where the Pyrenees rise to 3000m peaks. Here hiking trails weave among valleys and lonely villages are crowned with Romanesque churches and monasteries. And if one loves mountain scenery what could be better than an excursion to the Catalan Pyrenees featuring ski resorts which are tailor-made for snow tourism. Or to the National Park of Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici.

To the south is like stepping even further back in time, the Roman and Greek ruins of Tarragona are among Spain’s most impressive. And an entirely different landscape awaits in the Delta de l’Ebre’s shimmering wetlands, home to flocks of pirouetting flamingos.

This is an area so rich in scenery and heritage from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea.
